Dr. Mikao Usui founded the Reiki healing system in 1927.  Reiki is used in hospitals, hospice,  pain clinics, and integrative medicine centers worldwide including the Tuscon Medical Center's Cancer Treatment Center.  At Portsmouth Regional Medical Hospital in New Hampshire, patients receive Reiki during and immediately following surgery.  Dr. Cantwell of the California Pacific Medical Center states, "I have found Reiki to be useful in the treatment of muscle pain, headache, infections, asthma and chronic illnesses, especially those associated with chronic pain."
